My Insurance Card

The water runs slowly

drip, drip, drip

until it finds home

There is no cycle

Chaos decreases, not the other way around

My insurance card

never goes out of date

We were eating dates on the grass

You laughed as I plucked the strands,

wove them together

to place a handmade ring on your finger

Knowing I would never say those words

Did you know

My pencils

never need to be sharpened

so I will write and write

Until I understand that

when we made that cake together

the shitty icing did not

teach me anything about emulsion

But neither did it teach me anything about you

My vitamin B supplements

never go bad

I never open them to a rancid smell

like the trunk of my car on a summer day

Because the smell would remind me of you

So, my insurance card never goes out of date.
